FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. (March 12, 2017) – Team Babbitt’s/Monster Energy/AMSOIL Kawasaki Presented by AP Designs rider Travis Sewell and his KX™250F earned the holeshot and a hard-fought victory in the second main event for an overall podium at round nine of the 2017 AMSOIL Arenacross series in New Orleans.
In the first 250AX class main event, Gavin Faith and his No. 1 KX250F powered to the holeshot with teammate Sewell in sixth. On the first lap Faith gained more than a one-second lead over the field while Sewell battled for position. In the first two laps, Sewell dropped back to seventh place but continued to push. His determination was rewarded late in the race by making the pass for sixth, then fifth, where he would remain until the checkers. Meanwhile on lap 12, Faith made a mistake in the rhythm section and went down. He was able to rejoin the race in 11th place, where he remained throughout the last few laps.
In the second main event, Sewell powered out of the gate and left the field behind, never looking back, to a commanding win by more than six seconds. Teammate Faith left the gate in sixth place and settled in until lap nine when he made the pass for fifth. With three laps remaining, he made another pass for fourth, where he would remain until he crossed the line, going 11-4 for seventh overall. Sewell’s 5-1 earned him his first podium of 2017 with a third overall. Gared Steinke did not compete in the main events due to an issue that occurred early in the night.
“It feels great to get my first win of the season,” said Sewell. “This track was pretty intense; it felt like survival mode for most of the racing. Getting a good start was critical to a good result. Thankfully I had a great start in the second main and was able to walk away with the win.”
“There were a lot of ups and downs tonight,” said Faith. “I started the first main in a great spot and was feeling good until I lost it in the rhythm section. A crash like that is hard mentally, but we’re here to fight and defend the title.”
