CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. (Aug. 18) – GEICO/AMSOIL/Honda 250 riders Matt Bisceglia and R.J. Hampshire carry some momentum into the Ironman National on Saturday at Ironman Raceway for the season finale for the Pro Motocross series. Bisceglia is coming off his best career outdoor finish, and rookie Hampshire heads to Indiana with his season-best finish.
Bisceglia has placed himself solidly inside the top 10 in the 250 standings with a pair of top-10 finishes in his last two races, including a career-best fifth overall in Utah last weekend.
“I want to finish this week and next weekend off good in Indy and finish this season strong,” Bisceglia said. “I haven’t raced at Indy because I missed it last year, so I’m excited to see what it’s about. Hopefully it’s nicer weather there compared to the rain they had last year.”
Hampshire is battling for a top-10 points finish after a somewhat typical rookie season. He has shown plenty of speed but has been inconsistent at times as well. He has six top-10 overall finishes, led by a seventh overall in Utah.
“That was the first weekend this year that I had two top-10 finishes, and I believe it was my best weekend overall,” Hampshire said. “I can’t complain. The goal is to get on the box again, and we have one more week to work hard and do it. I need to finish it now and ride strong. We put together a solid weekend in Utah but we definitely need to do more.”
Fellow rookie Jordon Smith had a fall in Utah that kept him from a good finish. He has had two top-10 overall finishes – both at high-temperature races – and five top-11s. With the temperatures expected to be in the upper 80s with high humidity, Smith will be ready.
“I like the hot races and prefer them,” Smith said. “I wish we had had some more hot races this year. I have done training in south Georgia, so it doesn’t get much hotter than that with the humidity. My strong point this year was the hot races.
“I’m excited for Indy and to finish out the year strong. I know my speed is there and so are my starts, so I know I can get a really strong finish.”
Christian Craig has had numerous strong finishes in his abbreviated 2015 season, posting three top-fives and seven top-10s since joining the team at the season’s third race. He had a 10th in the first moto in Utah despite tweaking his back, which caused him to drop out of the second moto. Craig will spend this week making sure he’s ready for Indy.
“I qualified second in Utah, so I know my speed is there and I can stay at the front of the pack,” Craig said. “I’ll go to the doctor this week and try to make it feel better for Indy. Hopefully I won’t have to sit next weekend out and I will be feeling good after this week.”
You can watch the second motos on NBCSN beginning at 11:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, Aug. 22.
