Being from Arizona, J.R. Boyd grew up going to Monster Energy Supercross races in Phoenix. One year, he chatted with the guys at the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute booth to see how he could get into the racing side of working on bikes. When they told him he’d never get a job with a race team if he went to MMI, he went anyway. After landing a job with a team in Arizona, working with Mike Alessi and ultimately finding himself as a mechanic with the Rocky Mountain ATVMC KTM organization, he made sure to go right back to them and let them know it can be done.

Boyd will be entering the 2017 season as the crew chief for the newly formed Rocky Mountain ATV/MC KTM WPS Team. He will be working with the likes of Blake Baggett, Davi Millsaps and Benny Bloss, all of whom have been National Champions in the past.

Jeff Crutcher caught up with Boyd at the Monster Energy Cup to chat about his journey from student to mechanic.
