Morgantown, W. Va. (May 20, 2015) – America’s largest off-road motorcycle and ATV racing series returns to Preston County this weekend, May 23-24, for the 4th annual Mountaineer Run GNCC, to be held at Marvin’s Mountain in Masontown, W. Va. The event serves as round seven of the 2015 AMSOIL Grand National Cross Country Series presented by Maxxis, an AMA National Championship.
The Mountaineer Run GNCC is a favorite stop on the series schedule for fans and racers alike, due in part to the challenging terrain, dense woods sections and more. The rest of the 11-mile racecourse consists of fun, flowing trails, fast-paced grass sections, rocks, steep uphills and other obstacles that will make this stop a must-see on the tour.
Over 1,400 racers are expected to compete at the Mountaineer Run GNCC and the event will draw several thousand spectators from the surrounding community, as well as all over the U.S., ultimately bringing an estimated $3 million in revenue to Preston and Monongalia counties and surrounding areas.
Riders will compete on highly tuned dirt bikes and four-wheeled ATVs, and racers will include top international talent, such as U.S. National Champions and World Champions from Europe, Japan and Australia.
The event also offers great opportunity for local racers to showcase their talents in front of their hometown crowd. Layne Michael from nearby Fairmont, W. Va. is currently ranked second in the XC2 Pro Lites class, one of the premier pro classes in the series. His race accomplishments have earned Michael a spot on the RideMPS.com/AMSOIL/Honda Team. Michael will compete Sunday aboard his Honda CRF250F machine during the premier Pro Race starting at 1 p.m.
Also racing Sunday in the premier Pro Race will be current overall points leader and 2014 GNCC National Champion Kailub Russell. The Factory FMF/KTM racer was raised in Morgantown, where he attended University High School. Russell has represented the United States abroad the last two years in international off-road events.
Four-wheeled ATVs and UTVs will compete throughout the day on Saturday, May 23, and dirt bikes will race on Sunday, May 24. Local riders are invited to race the event, as GNCC Racing offers classes for riders of all skill and experience levels. The amateur racer entry fee is $40 and riders can sign up at the event.
Spectator passes run $20 for adults and $10 for kids (6-11) for the full weekend (Saturday through Sunday), with pro pit access and pro autographs at no additional charge. On both Saturday and Sunday, youth riders race at 8 a.m., amateur riders race at 10 a.m. and the top amateurs and the pros race at 1 p.m. Saturday afternoon will also host side-by-side racing at 4:30 p.m., featuring local race team Polaris/Coastal Drilling and driver Scott Kiger from nearby Waynesburg.
The Mountaineer Run GNCC takes place at Marvin’s Mountain – a private facility that has hosted the event since 2012. A mere three miles from downtown Masontown, Marvin’s Mountain has quickly earned the reputation as a premier off-road racing destination on the tour.
To get to the track, from I-68 take Exit 4, Route 7 (Sabraton). Follow Route 7 east approximately 11 miles to Masontown. Turn left at the Main Pharmacy and follow the signs 3 miles to the race. Food concessions and motorcycle parts and accessory vendors will be on-hand in the Sponsor Village.
In conjunction with the event, GNCC organizers, along with top professional bike and ATV athletes, will present an anti-bullying program titled “Keeping Students on the Right Track,” Friday morning, May 22, at West Preston Middle School in Masontown, and again Friday afternoon at Ridgedale Elementary in Morgantown. Racers will discuss bullying prevention awareness, team building and how to properly use safety equipment while riding a motorcycle or ATV.
The 1 p.m. pro races will be televised live on www.RacerTV.com both days, and a highlight show featuring the event will air on NBC Sports Network on Saturday, August 1 at 12:30 p.m.
The GNCC Series will return to West Virginia next month for round 9 of the series with the running of the 9th annual Snowshoe GNCC in Snowshoe, W. Va, June 20-21, 2015 at the spectacular Snowshoe Mountain Resort.
